Introducing Jack Pollock: Embracing Plant Futures at UC Berkeley

Meet Jack Pollock, an MBA student at UC Berkeley, whose journey towards sustainability was sparked by his experiences as a helicopter pilot in the US Navy, where he grappled with the environmental impact of burning jet fuel.

Now, Jack is turning his attention to the realm of food and agriculture, driven by a desire to mitigate the negative effects of our current food systems on climate change.

For the Plant Futures Challenge Lab, Jack has partnered with Upside Foods, eager to delve into the realm of sustainable food systems and uncover innovative solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. His enthusiasm stems from a quest to discover actionable strategies that go beyond simply eliminating meat from diets—a challenge he embraces with determination and curiosity.

"I'm most excited about learning what the best opportunities are to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions currently produced by our food systems. Eliminating meat from everyone's diets would work, but what do you do when most people don't accept that as a solution?"

Looking ahead, Jack envisions a future food system characterized by locality and minimal processing, driven by widespread education and awareness.

Drawing from his own passion for cooking, nurtured since his middle school home-ec class, he advocates for empowering individuals to embrace healthier, more sustainable eating habits at home.

Join Jack and the Plant Futures community as we chart a course towards a more sustainable, plant-centric future.
